11 million devices infected with botnet malware hosted in Google Play

Researchers from Kaspersky have discovered malware similar to that found in an Android app five years ago, now in two new apps downloaded from Google Play 11 million times. The malware, called Necro, infects apps through a rogue software development kit (SDK) for displaying ads, and uses sophisticated techniques to communicate with malicious servers. Infected devices subsequently connect to servers controlled by the attackers, upload user data, download malicious code, and execute actions determined by the attackers.
