21 people lose at least $210k in malware scams involving sale of used goods

In September, at least 21 people fell victim to malware scams whilst attempting to sell second-hand goods online, with losses totalling $210,000. Scammers posted fake advertisements on Facebook, tricking victims into downloading an Android Package Kit containing malware. This enabled access to the victims’ devices, including bank details and passwords, leading to unauthorised transactions. Police urged caution when responding to online ads and advised downloading applications from official stores, checking developer information and reporting any suspicious content.
