Michigan-based Holland Eye Surgery and Laser Center is notifying 42,200 patients that an unauthorized user hacked into a patient database in 2016. The hacker potentially accessed personal data including health insurance information, Social Security numbers, and dates of birth. Law enforcement is investigating the breach, and the hacker claimed to have sold some of the data for fraudulent purposes. Holland Eye Surgery is offering affected patients a year of free credit monitoring and is working on improving network security. Breached and misconfigured databases continue to be an issue in the healthcare sector.
