46% jump in scripts dispensed, health services use increases

The number of dementia medication prescriptions dispensed in Australia increased 46% from 472,000 in 2013-14 to nearly 688,000 in 2022-23, according to the Australian Institute of Health and Welfare (AIHW). Hospitalisations due to dementia also rose 24% to 26,300 in 2022-23. As Australia’s population ages, dementia has become a significant health and aged care issue, with no known cure, but several symptom management strategies.
