Deepfakes of victims used in sextortion attacks spike, FBI warns
The FBI has warned of an increasing trend of “sextortion” campaigns where cybercriminals use sexualised deepfake images or videos to extort money from victims. The content, created from scrape or stolen media, is used to threaten victims with public embarrassment if they don’t comply. The bureau has received over 7,000 reports related to this issue in 2022, resulting in at least 3,000 victims. The FBI encourages caution in what is posted online and recommends regularly checking for personal information circulating without permission.
