Apple is suing Israeli surveillance technology company NSO Group for allegedly accessing users’ devices without authorization. Apple is seeking damages and wants to block NSO Group from accessing or using Apple products. NSO Group claims its surveillance technology is used by government intelligence and law enforcement agencies to track criminals, but Apple argues that it has been used against journalists, activists, and public officials. The US Department of Commerce has included NSO Group on its Entity List for engaging in activities contrary to national security and foreign policy interests. Apple plans to contribute damages plus $10 million to organizations pursuing cybersurveillance research and advocacy.
