Demetrius Cervantes, a man from McKinney, Texas, has been sentenced to 48 months in federal prison for stealing protected health information. Cervantes, along with two others, breached a provider’s electronic health record system and sold the stolen information to durable medical equipment contractors. They used the proceeds to purchase luxury items. The US Department of Justice is cracking down on such crimes and treating ransomware investigations as a terrorism-level priority.
