DOJ announces ‘successful’ FBI hacking attempt to remove Microsoft Exchange cyber threat

The FBI has successfully removed malicious scripts from hundreds of vulnerable computers in the United States without informing the owners. The operation aimed to combat cyber threats and was authorized by a court. Microsoft had previously reported that a hacking group called HAFNIUM was using unknown vulnerabilities to compromise Exchange Servers. The FBI’s action removed web shells left by the hacking group, which could have been used for unauthorized access to networks, but did not patch vulnerabilities or remove additional malware. The agency is attempting to notify the computer owners about the operation.
