VA payments system hit by hackers, breaching data of 46,000 vets

Approximately 46,000 veterans’ personal information was exposed in a data breach at the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs. Unauthorized users accessed an online application to change financial information and divert payments. The breach was caused by hackers using social engineering techniques and exploiting authentication protocols. The VA is conducting a security review and offering credit monitoring services.
