The United Kingdom’s National Cyber Security Centre (NCSC) has warned that Russian hackers, known as APT29 or “Cozy Bear,” are targeting organizations involved in the development and testing of coronavirus vaccines. The US and Canadian governments have supported the advisory, with evidence indicating that the hackers are trying to steal information about COVID-19 vaccines. The NCSC report highlights the group’s techniques, including exploiting vulnerable systems, spear-phishing, and deploying custom malware. Cybersecurity threats to healthcare organizations have increased during the pandemic, with hackers exploiting the rush to cloud hosting and telemedicine implementation.
