Proposed Senate bill would fine, jail execs who conceal data breaches

Sen. Bill Nelson has introduced a bill that would require all US organizations to notify consumers of data breaches within 30 days, and impose criminal penalties on executives who conceal such events. The bill aims to eliminate the patchwork of state requirements and crack down on executives who attempt to hide breaches. The legislation comes after news that Uber concealed a 2016 data breach. If passed, the bill would also require the Federal Trade Commission to draft security protocols for use by all businesses.
