Downtime events in hospitals that disrupt the electronic health record can lead to patient safety risks, according to a study. Over a three-year period, 76 incidents were reported during downtime, with the lab department most affected. Issues included labeling and tracking of specimens, medication administration errors, and delays in care. The study highlights the need for effective downtime procedures and the development of validated solutions to prevent patient safety risks. Hospitals are advised to practice downtime procedures, refine paper processes, establish communication processes, and focus on patient identification.
