UK voter data hacked in cyber attack on election watchdog

The UK’s Electoral Commission has experienced a major cyber attack. The hacker accessed its systems in August 2021 and remained undetected for over a year. They accessed servers holding email, control systems and electoral registers containing personal data of millions of voters registered between 2014 and 2022. The data was not altered, but there are concerns it could be used in further cyber attacks, such as phishing and fraud attempts.
