Healthcare organizations faced a challenging year in 2017 as they were targeted by cybercriminals. A new study predicts that the situation will worsen in 2018, with smaller providers and Internet of Things devices becoming the main focus for attackers. The number of reported hacking events increased by 24% in 2017 compared to the previous year, with ransomware incidents representing 25% of all reported events. However, the number of compromised records decreased significantly in 2017. Cybercriminals are increasingly turning their attention to smaller healthcare entities and exploiting vulnerabilities in IoT devices.
