Biggest EHR challenges for 2018: Security, interoperability, clinician burnout
Hospitals and health systems will face challenges in implementing and maintaining electronic health record (EHR) systems in 2018. Chief information officers and other executives should focus on cybersecurity and ensure that the data collected by EHRs remains safe. Interoperability between systems is also a challenge, and strategies need to be developed to integrate data collected in different care settings. The rise of value-based care and the need for genomics functionality in EHRs are additional challenges. Finally, information overload and clinician burnout with EHRs need to be addressed to improve productivity and patient safety.
