Medical data of U.S. Olympic athletes leaked by Russian hackers
The Russian cybercriminal group ‘Tsar Team’ hacked into the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) and leaked confidential medical records of athletes who competed in the 2016 Summer Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro. WADA believes the hackers used a spearphishing attack to gain access to athlete data, including medical information. Law enforcement authorities have confirmed that the attacks originated from Russia. The attack is seen as a response to the banning of Russia’s track and field team over an alleged state-supported doping program. The Russian government denies any involvement in the attack.
