Beware – that Google Chrome update alert might actually just be malware

Cybercriminals are running “update your browser” campaigns to trick users into downloading malware, according to Proofpoint. They compromise legitimate websites then change them to display a fake pop-up telling users their browser is out of date. This encourages them to install a dangerous “update” and infects their device with malware that can steal sensitive information. To avoid this, it is key to remember that most browser updates happen automatically and never through pop-up windows.
