One Year of ChatGPT: The Impact of Generative AI on Cybersecurity

OpenAI’s ChatGPT, a large language model (LLM) chatbot, has been used in social engineering campaigns but has had a limited impact on the cybercrime landscape otherwise. While there’s potential for its misuse, generative AI also has defensive benefits in cybersecurity. Its use is being regulated to prevent abuse, with a EU law passed in June 2023 controlling “foundational models” following the release of ChatGPT. The use of LLMs has broadened AI technology access and prioritized it at the board level in organizations.
