Ransomware and the NHS – the inquest begins
A global ransomware attack which severely affected the UK’s NHS was enabled by outdated computer systems running Windows XP, a significant percentage of hospitals still use the system, which no longer receives security support from creator Microsoft. The same software platforms are also used in key medical equipment, which is itself often not connected to the internet. Other organisations prefer to delay system updates to avoid compatibility issues with other applications.
