The 2024 Breach Barometer reports a staggering 171 million patient records breached. And that’s just the ones we know about.

Protenus’s annual Breach Barometer reported 1,161 breaches and approximately 171 million compromised patient records in 2023. This represents a 2% increase in reports and 187% increase in affected records over 2022. These numbers may not be accurate as many breaches are not fully reported and it is often difficult to determine the type or extent of each incident. Protenus noted that, while breaches are investigated, the focus is more on voluntary corrective action, rather than monetary penalty and enforcement.
