Tracking down kidney failure: Western Sussex develops AKI alerts

Patientrack, which allows medical staff to record patients’ vital signs at the bedside and calculate how badly they may be affected by sepsis among other ailments using National Early Warning Scores, is being used by Western Sussex hospitals for the early detection of patients at risk of sepsis and kidney injury. The system was first launched in the trust in 2012 to pinpoint deteriorating patients. In its first full year of operation, it helped bring the rate of emergency admissions for people being re-admitted to hospital within 30 days at Western Sussex hospitals down from 6.8% to 5.4%.
