Southampton hospital repeatedly breaches mixed-sex ward rule

University Hospital Southampton (UHS) has recorded 527 breaches of NHS England’s ban on mixed sex accommodation in hospitals in 2024 so far. The statistics show a significant increase in violations compared to regional hospitals. Mixed-ward breaches lead to issues such as loss of privacy and dignity for patients, according to Jason Brady, head of medical negligence at Blackwater Law. UHS stated that patient care is their priority, and admitted that extreme pressure and high emergency admissions can impact bed availability.
