NHS cyber security: Ex security chief warns of future attacks

The NHS could be subject to further cyber-attacks if it does not update its IT systems, according to a leading cybersecurity expert. Professor Ciaran Martin, former head of the National Cyber Security Centre, was commenting after a significant ransomware attack disrupted London’s healthcare services. The Russian hacker group believed to be responsible demanded a £40m ransom. The NHS declined to pay, resulting in the group publishing stolen data. The UK’s health service is said to be grappling with ageing IT infrastructure and a failure to identify system vulnerabilities.
