Amid Medicaid ‘Unwinding,’ Many States Wind Up Expanding

North Carolina recently expanded Medicaid eligibility, allowing an additional 500,000 North Carolinians to gain coverage. While states have disenrolled more than 24 million Medicaid beneficiaries since pandemic protections expired, moves to expand health coverage have helped offset this. Such expansions include efforts by South Dakota and Oregon, new federal laws requiring state coverage for children, and widened income eligibility rules in Arizona, Maine and North Dakota as well as for pregnant women in Nevada, North Dakota, and Tennessee.
