Maternal Health Crisis: Lack of Access to Care “Doesn’t Paint the Whole Picture,” Expert Says

A lack of access to healthcare isn’t the only cause behind the greater maternal mortality rates of black women compared to white women, according to Dr. Bayo Curry-Winchell. Speaking in Chicago, Curry-Winchell cited other factors including racial discrimination, clinician bias, and a lack of cultural and linguistic competency. She called for changes in the treatment of unconscious bias, and the consistent miss-hearing or miss-seeing of patients.
