The listeria outbreak linked to recalled Boar’s Head deli meat has claimed nine lives, according to the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. The fatalities were recorded in eight different states, with six deaths confirmed since 8 August. Across 18 states, 57 people have been reported as sickened by the bacteria, all of whom have been hospitalized. This is the largest outbreak since a similar scandal in 2011 involving cantaloupes. The figures are likely to rise, as the illnesses are not always diagnosed. Last month, Boar’s Head recalled its liverwurst and other products.
