The Arctic Sea revealed as a potential treasure trove for new medicines
Scientists have discovered new compounds in Arctic Sea bacteria, that can help fight antibiotic-resistant infections and potentially lead to new treatments. Deriving from the actinobacteria group—which 70% of currently licensed antibiotics were developed from—the compounds were found to inhibit virulence of bacteria instead of killing them or stopping their growth. This approach lessens the likelihood of resistance development, leading to optimism in these molecules’ potential against rising antibiotic resistance.
