A meningococcal disease expert says it is unfair that only certain Australian children get free protection against a potentially fatal infection. All children are vaccinated against some strains of the disease, but only Indigenous children and those with high-risk medical conditions receive a funded vaccine for the most common strain, via the National Immunisation Program. Some states fund vaccination for under-twos and teenagers, but people in NSW, Victoria, Tasmania and Western Australia have to pay.
