A study published in Nature suggests that inflammation of the hypothalamus contributes to obesity. Researchers found that an overgrowth of proteins and sugars (extracellular matrix or ECM) around specific neurons disrupts insulin activity, leading to increased dietary intake and obesity. Interrupting the development of the ECM in the hypothalamus of obese mice improved their metabolic function and reduced weight, indicating potential new treatments for obesity.
