A peer-reviewed paper published in the scientific journal Cell argues that the COVID-19 pandemic likely started in a seafood market in Wuhan, China, due to animal spillover. The international research team found that the virus was present in several market stalls housing animals susceptible to the virus. However, they could not definitively confirm if these animals were infected.
