A Fix for Antibiotic Resistance Could Be Hiding in The Past

A technique known as “phage steering” is being revisited as a potential treatment for antibiotic-resistant bacteria. The method, which uses bacteriophages to kill bacteria, was first discovered by microbiologist Félix d’Hérelle in 1910 and used in the treatment of diseases until antibiotics were widely adopted. Initial tests using the revised strategy, which uses bacteriophages and antibiotics simultaneously, forcing bacteria into an evolutionary dilemma, have shown promising results. However, the full scope of its effectiveness remains unclear.
