A Texas woman has been sentenced to 30 months in federal prison for stealing protected health information from a provider’s electronic health record. She breached the EHR to steal patients’ PHI and personal data, which was then sold to durable medical equipment providers. The woman and her codefendants obtained over $1.4 million from the scheme. Healthcare breaches are becoming increasingly common, but consequences for those responsible are strict, including prison time, fines, and firings.
