ACLU brings suit against Rhode Island HIE

A lawsuit filed by the American Civil Liberties Union against the Rhode Island Department of Health could signal future legal issues as states establish their own health information exchanges (HIEs). The suit focuses on the department’s failure to address privacy concerns during the implementation of a RIQI-led initiative called currentcare. Other states setting up their own information exchanges may face similar complaints. The president of RIQI has clarified that the suit is not against the HIE, but rather the department’s procedures and administration.
