An example of governance for AI in health services from Aotearoa New Zealand

A governance framework for AI in healthcare was developed based on international guidelines, patient surveys, internal data analysis and Māori data sovereignty principles. The framework was tested and refined by evaluating AI proposals. It emphasized the necessity of transparency, data security and privacy protection, patient beneficence and maintained the rights of Māori people. An AI Governance Group was formed to oversee this. Initial use of the framework on AI tools related to diabetic retinopathy and COVID risk scores aided further refinement.
