As quantum computing threats loom, Microsoft updates its core crypto library
Microsoft has updated its SymCrypt cryptographic library with two new encryption algorithms, ML-KEM and XMSS, to defend against potential quantum computer attacks. The move starts a broader revamp of encryption protocols using algorithms not susceptible to such attacks. The current commonly used algorithms are vulnerable to quantum computing breaches despite being virtually impenetrable by classical computers. Both newly introduced algorithms became uniform standards by the National Institute of Standards and Technology last month.
