Beware – that Google Chrome update alert might actually just be malware

Fake “update your browser” campaigns are actively tricking people into installing malware on their devices, according to a new report from Proofpoint. Legitimate websites are compromised to display misleading pop-ups impersonating Google, Mozilla, Microsoft or other companies. Users who download the deceptive “update” infect their system with malware which extracts sensitive information for further attacks or identity theft. The report advises applying common sense as no significant browser manufacturers prompt users to update browsers via pop-up windows.
