In September 2020, Düsseldorf University Hospital’s systems were disabled by a ransomware attack, leading to the death of a 78-year-old woman due to diverted emergency treatment. A similar attack against mental health service provider Vastaamo resulted in the leak of sensitive patient information when the ransom wasn’t paid. In August 2022, a ransomware attack disrupted the NHS 111 non-emergency service in the UK.
