Researchers at the University of California San Diego have developed a new biometric technology that can securely identify newborns and children with just a finger wave. The non-contact optical scanner, called ION, creates encrypted finger and palm scans that can be shared securely with laptops and mobile devices. The technology is expected to be available commercially within a year and could help with tracking vaccinations, disaster relief, human trafficking prevention, refugee settlement, and reuniting migrant children with their families.
