Bon Secours says data breach affects 655,000 patients
Personal information of over 650,000 Bon Secours patients, including names, insurance IDs, banking info, social security numbers, and clinical data, was exposed for four days in April. R-C Healthcare Management, a business associate of the hospital system, inadvertently left the data accessible online while adjusting network settings. R-C Healthcare promptly took steps to secure the information and hired an outside forensic investigator. Bon Secours conducted an internal investigation and found that patient names, social security numbers, bank account info, and limited clinical data may have been exposed. Medical records were not accessed, and medical care was not affected. Bon Secours began notifying affected individuals in August.
