California HIE in revamp mode

California’s statewide health information exchange (HIE) is transitioning, with 75% of the state’s counties having community-based operating HIEs or will be in planning stages by the end of 2012. Challenges include limited staffing and resources, finding a new partner, and patient consent. Despite this, the HIE goals include creating an interoperable EHR for foster children, reducing complications of stroke, and creating an emergency department case for catastrophic earthquakes. Ultimately, the focus is on the patient and their care.
