Covid: How does the alert level system work?

The UK has raised its Covid-19 alert level from three to four due to a rapid increase in Omicron cases. The last time the UK was at this level was in early 2020. This change does not automatically indicate tightening or easing of restrictions, as the alert system operates independently from government decisions.
