EPIC Stresses FCC Pilot Program Should Prioritize Student Privacy, Not Merely School Cybersecurity
Alright, gather round folks. You’ve probably already heard whispers about this, but last month, our pals over at EPIC made waves with the Federal Communications Commission (FCC). What’s all the fuss about, you ask? Well, I reckon it’s about time I fill you in – and trust me, it’s worth knowing about, especially if you’ve got a vested interest in healthcare and cybersecurity like we do.
Now picture this: our schools and libraries are increasingly coming under the eagle eye of hackers. Terrifying, right? So, our mates at EPIC, always on the front foot, have declared their hearty endorsement for the FCC’s new proposal. What’s the plan? Well, it’s to divert funds from its E-Rate program with plans of boosting cybersecurity in said schools and libraries.
Just to fill you in, the E-Rate program is a tidy package that offers schools and libraries a leg-up by facilitating discounted pricing, so they can offer free internet access to all the boys and girls, and the library-loving folks. Quite a handy deal if you ask me!
EPIC, savvy as they are, made a point to encourage the FCC not to confine themselves to a tight list of eligible purchases for this fresh-faced cybersecurity initiative. And why should they? EPIC suggested dishing out examples of common cybersecurity practices in today’s digital age.
But, of course, there’s always another side to the coin. EPIC underscored the need for these institutions not to pursue the new cybersecurity implements at the expense of student privacy – a vital point indeed. They urged the FCC to voice this standpoint loud and clear, including the extent of the Children’s Internet Protection Act (CIPA). We’re talking about a balance between security and privacy here, folks.
A few other voices chimed in too, and EPIC agreed wholeheartedly. The consensus? The initiative should fund schools and libraries annually over three years, rather than hitting them with a one-time payment for the same period. Makes sense doesn’t it? A steady flow of support would be far more beneficial than a sudden lump sum.
You may have noticed that EPIC is no stranger to rubbing shoulders with the FCC. They’re always keeping the powers-that-be on their toes, advocating vigorously for consumer privacy measures in broadband services, and particular attention to student privacy.
So, there you have it! It’s a changing landscape out there, and these moves by EPIC are certainly steps in the right direction. Protection, security and privacy are key, and it’s heartening to know there are organizations like EPIC keeping an eye on things. After all, as our world becomes more interconnected, who doesn’t want a bit of vigilance?
