“Getting cybersecurity wrong puts patients at risk”
The WannaCry cyberattack in 2017 caused the NHS logistical chaos and significant financial damage, costing an estimated £92m and infecting over a third of trusts. Post-attack repairs were crucial to prevent a similar incident. Despite efforts made since 2017, cyberattacks have still affected the NHS. Mike Fell, executive director of national cybersecurity operations at NHS Digital, emphasised that mistakes in cybersecurity can cause harm to patients and undermine public trust. Basic security standards and preventative work have been increased in response.
