Government watchdog raises red flag on health IT security

A review by the Department of Health and Human Services has found that the Office of the National Coordinator has not fully addressed security concerns in health information technology. The review highlighted a lack of general IT security controls in the ONC’s standards. The Office of Inspector General recommended that the ONC broaden its focus to include general IT security controls and provide guidance to the healthcare industry on established security standards. The ONC agreed with the recommendations.
