The U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of New York has allowed Microsoft, Fortra, and the Health Information Sharing & Analysis Center to remove illegal copies of Cobalt Strike used by ransomware-as-a-service operations. The court order will disrupt cybercriminals’ infrastructure and hinder the monetization of illegal copies, forcing criminals to change their tactics. The investigation included collaboration with various partners, including law enforcement agencies. The case also involved copyright claims against the malicious use of Microsoft and Fortra’s software code. Attacks using these products have impacted healthcare organizations worldwide.
