How Does the NHS COVID-19 App Work and Can You Trust It?

The UK government’s new NHS COVID-19 contact tracing app uses Bluetooth technology to detect potential coronavirus transmission. It does not track location or personal information. The app uses encrypted, daily-generated ID codes to calculate contact scores related to transmission risk. Users can check in to places via QR codes, though this does not share location data. Alerts and notifications are fully anonymous, and all data can be deleted. The app was reviewed for privacy by Apple, Google and the National Cyber Security Centre.
