iOS changes will address HIPAA risk
Currently, Apple products broadcast a unique ID called the MAC address, which allows people to be tracked via their mobile devices. However, upcoming changes to how MAC addresses are handled by Apple’s iOS 8 will make it impossible or difficult to track individuals. This poses a security risk in hospitals, as staff members could track patients and visitors could track each other. The risk lies in potentially sensitive information being associated with specific individuals. These changes will take time to be implemented, so the risk remains for now.
