Is social media fueling the teen suicide crisis?
Between 2007 and 2018, suicide rates in young people aged ten to twenty-four increased by 57.4%; a rise that coincided with the growth of social media. Studies show a correlation between increased social media use and heightened suicide risk, especially in girls. Simultaneously, mental health disorders outpaced physical conditions as the major health issue among adolescents. Annette Erlangsen, a Danish suicide expert, also notes instances of suicide pacts being formed through social media. The issue includes social media giants like Facebook, accused of contributing to mental health issues and ignoring the evidence.
