The NHS has issued an urgent call for blood donors after stocks of O positive and O negative blood fell to extremely low levels. The situation has been mainly caused by a recent cyber attack, a subsequent increase in demand from hospitals and missed appointments. NHS Blood and Transplant (NHSBT) has instructed hospitals to only use type O blood for essential cases and seek substitutions where possible.
