Millions hit in cyber attack on electoral roll that no one noticed for a year

The UK Electoral Commission has apologised following a 14-month cyberattack in which hackers were able to access voter registration data between 2014 and 2022. The breach was identified in October 2022 and initial access was believed to have been gained in August 2021. The organisation’s Shaun McNally stressed that the largely paper-based nature of the UK’s electoral system made it difficult to influence the outcome via such an attack.
